Meta ads glossary
Every Meta ads term, made plain.
80 terms from ROAS to the Conversions API — each with a one-line definition, the formula where there is one, a worked example and the mistakes to avoid.
A
- Account spending limitAn account spending limit is a ceiling you set on the total amount your Meta ad account can spend. When spend reaches it, all ads in the account stop until you raise, reset or remove the limit. It doesn't reset by itself each month.Campaign setup
- Ad auctionThe ad auction is how Meta decides which ad to show each time someone could see one. The ad with the highest total value wins: a combination of the advertiser's bid, Meta's estimate of how likely the person is to act and the ad's quality.Auction & bidding
- Ad fatigueAd fatigue is the decline in an ad's performance as the same people see it too often. The classic pattern is rising frequency, falling click-through rate and rising cost per purchase. The usual fix is new creative, not a new audience.Creative
- Ad relevance diagnosticsAd relevance diagnostics are three Ads Manager rankings, quality, engagement rate and conversion rate, that compare your ad with ads competing for the same audience. They replaced the old relevance score in 2019 and appear after 500 impressions.Auction & bidding
- Ad setAn ad set is the middle level of a Meta campaign. It holds the settings that decide delivery: audience, placements, schedule, optimisation event, bid strategy and, with ad set budgets, the budget. Each ad set contains one or more ads.Campaign setup
- Ad set budget (ABO)An ad set budget — often called ABO — is a daily or lifetime budget set on each ad set rather than on the campaign. You decide exactly how much each ad set can spend, which makes it the usual choice for controlled creative and audience tests.Campaign setup
- Add-to-cart rateAdd-to-cart rate is the percentage of visitors who add a product to their cart. For Meta ads it is usually measured as AddToCart events divided by landing page views or link clicks, and it shows how well the product page persuades.Metrics
- Advantage+ audienceAdvantage+ audience is Meta's automated targeting. Meta finds the people most likely to convert using its own signals, treating any age, interest or custom audience you add as a suggestion rather than a limit. Locations, minimum age and exclusions stay as hard controls.Audiences
- Advantage+ campaign budget (formerly CBO)Advantage+ campaign budget — formerly campaign budget optimisation (CBO) — sets one budget at campaign level and lets Meta shift it between ad sets in real time, towards the ones getting the best results for your goal.Campaign setup
- Advantage+ catalog ads (formerly dynamic product ads)Advantage+ catalog ads, formerly dynamic product ads, automatically show products from your catalogue to the people most likely to buy them. They combine a product feed with pixel or app events, so one template can retarget viewers or reach new buyers.Campaign setup
- Advantage+ creativeAdvantage+ creative is a set of automatic enhancements Meta can apply to your ads, such as adjusting brightness, adding music, animating images, expanding images to fit placements and varying your text. You switch each one on or off per ad.Creative
- Advantage+ placements (formerly automatic placements)Advantage+ placements, formerly automatic placements, let Meta show your ads wherever they're likely to perform best across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Audience Network and Threads where available, shifting delivery between placements automatically.Campaign setup
- AEMAggregated Event Measurement (AEM)Aggregated Event Measurement (AEM) is Meta's privacy-preserving way of measuring conversions from people who opted out of tracking, introduced for Apple's iOS 14.5 changes. Its old eight-event limit for web events has been removed in most accounts.Tracking & attribution
- AOVAverage order value (AOV)Average order value (AOV) is the average amount a customer spends per order: total revenue divided by the number of orders. A higher AOV spreads per-order costs such as shipping over more revenue, so you can afford to pay more for each sale.Metrics
- ASCAdvantage+ sales campaigns (ASC)Advantage+ sales campaigns are Meta's automated campaigns for the Sales objective. You set the budget, conversion event and creative. Meta's AI picks the audience, placements and budget split. They replaced Advantage+ shopping campaigns.Campaign setup
- ATTApp Tracking Transparency (ATT)App Tracking Transparency (ATT) is Apple's rule, introduced with iOS 14.5 in April 2021, that apps must ask permission before tracking people across other companies' apps and websites. Many users decline, which reduced the data Meta receives about iPhone users.Tracking & attribution
- Attribution windowAn attribution window is the period after someone clicks, engages with or views an ad during which Meta credits a conversion to that ad. Meta's standard for sales campaigns is 7-day click and 1-day view, now with a separate 1-day engage-through window.Tracking & attribution
B
- Bid capBid cap is a Meta bid strategy that sets the most you're willing to bid in any single ad auction. Meta never bids above it, which gives tight cost control, but a cap set too low can stop delivery almost entirely.Auction & bidding
- Bid strategyA bid strategy tells Meta how to bid for you in each ad auction: spend the budget for the most results or value (highest volume, highest value), aim for an average cost (cost per result goal) or return (ROAS goal), or cap every bid (bid cap).Auction & bidding
- Break-even ROASBreak-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which ad costs use up exactly the margin on each order, so you neither make nor lose money. It equals your selling price divided by your contribution margin per order.Metrics
- Broad targetingBroad targeting means giving Meta minimal audience restrictions, usually just location and perhaps age, and letting your creative and Meta's delivery system find buyers. It works best with reliable purchase tracking and a steady flow of conversions.Audiences
- Business portfolioA business portfolio, formerly called Business Manager, is the Meta container that owns and controls access to your business assets: ad accounts, Pages, Instagram accounts, pixels, catalogues and domains, and the people and partners who use them.Campaign setup
C
- CACCAC (customer acquisition cost)CAC (customer acquisition cost) is what it costs to win one new customer. In its simplest form it is marketing spend divided by the number of new customers in the same period. Unlike CPA, it ignores repeat purchases.Metrics
- Campaign objectiveA campaign objective is the result you ask Meta to deliver: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion or Sales. It steers who Meta shows your ads to, so for most online stores the right choice is Sales, optimised for purchases.Campaign setup
- CAPIConversions API (CAPI)The Conversions API (CAPI) sends conversion events from your server straight to Meta, rather than from the visitor's browser. Run alongside the Meta Pixel with deduplication, it recovers events that ad blockers and browser limits hide.Tracking & attribution
- Carousel adsCarousel ads show two to ten images or videos in a single ad, each card with its own headline and link, which people swipe through. They suit showing several products, features, steps or angles of one product.Creative
- COGSCOGS (cost of goods sold)COGS (cost of goods sold) is the direct cost of the products you sold in a period: what you paid to make or buy them and get them ready to sell. It is the first cost subtracted from revenue when working out margin and POAS.Metrics
- Collection adsCollection ads show a main image or video with several product images underneath. A tap opens a full-screen Instant Experience inside Facebook or Instagram where people browse products before going to your site. They are a mobile format.Creative
- Contribution marginContribution margin is what's left from a sale after every variable cost of fulfilling it, such as product cost, packaging, shipping, payment fees and returns. It is the money available to pay for ads, overheads and profit.Metrics
- Conversion lift studyA conversion lift study is a Meta experiment that randomly splits people into a group that can see your ads and a holdout group that can't, then compares conversions. The difference is the lift: the sales your ads actually caused.Tracking & attribution
- Conversion rate (CVR)Conversion rate is the percentage of people who click your ad and go on to buy, usually purchases divided by landing page views or link clicks. It measures how well your page and offer turn ad traffic into sales.Metrics
- Cost cap (cost per result goal)Cost cap, now called cost per result goal in Ads Manager, is a bid strategy that asks Meta to keep your average cost per result at or below a figure you set, while getting as many results as it can. It may underspend to protect the goal.Auction & bidding
- Cost per add to cartCost per add to cart is your ad spend divided by the number of AddToCart events your ads drove. It is a mid-funnel cost that helps you judge ads before they have enough purchases to judge on cost per purchase.Metrics
- Cost per resultCost per result is the Meta Ads Manager column showing your average cost for each result, where a result is whatever the ad set is optimised for — purchases, leads, landing page views, link clicks and so on. It's only as meaningful as the result behind it.Metrics
- CPACPA (cost per acquisition)CPA (cost per acquisition) is how much ad spend it takes to win one conversion — for most online stores, one purchase. It's total ad spend divided by the number of conversions.Metrics
- CPCCPC (cost per click)CPC (cost per click) is the average amount you pay for each click on your ad. On Meta, CPC (cost per link click) counts only clicks through to your destination, while CPC (all) spreads spend across every kind of click.Metrics
- CPMCPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)CPM (cost per mille, or cost per 1,000 impressions) is what you pay for every 1,000 times your ad is shown. On Meta it's set by the ad auction, so it rises and falls with competition, audience, placement, season and how relevant your ads are.Metrics
- Creative testingCreative testing is the structured process of comparing ad hooks, angles and formats to find the ones that sell at an acceptable cost. Good tests have a clear hypothesis, a fair budget per variant and decision rules set before launch.Creative
- CTRCTR (click-through rate)CTR (click-through rate) is the percentage of ad impressions that lead to a click. On Meta, link CTR counts clicks through to your destination, while CTR (all) counts every click, tap or swipe on the ad.Metrics
- Custom audienceA custom audience is a group of people who already know your business, built from your own data: website visitors, customer lists, app users or people who engaged with your Facebook or Instagram content. Use it to retarget, exclude buyers or seed lookalikes.Audiences
D
- Dark postsDark posts are ads that don't appear on your Facebook Page or Instagram profile. They show only to the people you target. Every ad created from scratch in Ads Manager is technically a dark post, which lets you test many versions without cluttering your page.Creative
- Detailed targetingDetailed targeting is Meta's option to reach people by interests, demographics and behaviours, such as an interest in yoga or being a frequent traveller. Interest exclusions were removed in 2024 and 2025, and in Advantage+ audience interests are suggestions only.Audiences
- Domain verificationDomain verification proves to Meta that your business portfolio owns a website domain, by adding a DNS TXT record, a meta tag or an HTML file. It controls who can edit link previews to your site and is still recommended, although Meta no longer requires it for event setup.Tracking & attribution
- Dynamic creativeDynamic creative is a Meta ad set setting that mixes images, videos, headlines and text you upload into combinations and shows the ones it predicts each person will respond to. For Sales campaigns it has largely been replaced by flexible ad format.Creative
E
- EMQEvent match quality (EMQ)Event match quality (EMQ) is Meta's score out of 10 for how well the customer information sent with an event lets Meta match it to a person's account. Better matching means more conversions can be attributed and used for optimisation.Tracking & attribution
- Exclusion audiencesExclusion audiences are custom audiences you tell Meta not to show an ad to, such as recent purchasers or existing customers. They keep prospecting spend on new people and stop retargeting ads reaching people who already bought.Audiences
F
- Flexible ad formatFlexible ad format lets you upload several images and videos to one ad, and Meta decides for each person and placement whether to show it as a single image, a video or a carousel. It is chosen at the ad level and replaced dynamic creative in Sales campaigns.Creative
- FrequencyFrequency is the average number of times each person saw your ad over a chosen period. On Meta it equals impressions divided by reach, and a steady rise alongside falling results is one of the earliest signs of ad fatigue.Metrics
H
- Highest volume biddingHighest volume is Meta's default bid strategy, formerly called lowest cost. Meta spends your whole budget and bids automatically to get as many results as it can, with no cost or ROAS target. Its value twin is highest value.Auction & bidding
- Hold rateHold rate is the share of viewers who keep watching your video ad after the first few seconds — commonly ThruPlays divided by 3-second video plays. It shows whether the body of a video holds the attention its hook earned.Metrics
- Hook rateHook rate is the share of video ad impressions that turn into a view of at least 3 seconds: 3-second video plays divided by impressions. It shows how well the opening moments of a video stop the scroll.Metrics
I
- ImpressionsImpressions are the number of times your ads were shown on screen. They count views, not people — one person who sees the same ad three times adds three impressions — so impressions are always equal to or higher than reach.Metrics
- IncrementalityIncrementality is the share of results that happened only because of your ads: sales that wouldn't have occurred without them. It's measured with lift or holdout tests that compare people or regions who could see your ads with a similar group who couldn't.Tracking & attribution
L
- LALLookalike audience (LAL)A lookalike audience is a group of new people Meta finds who resemble a source audience you supply, such as your buyers. You pick a country and a size from 1% (closest match) to 10% of its population, and Meta builds the audience from its own data.Audiences
- Learning phaseThe learning phase is the period after you launch or significantly edit a Meta ad set while the delivery system works out how best to deliver it. Results are less stable, and by Meta's guidance it ends after roughly 50 optimisation events within about a week.Campaign setup
- Lifetime budgetA lifetime budget is the total amount you're willing to spend on a campaign or ad set over its whole schedule, from a start date to an end date. Meta paces spend across that period and can spend more on days with better opportunities.Campaign setup
- Link clicksLink clicks count the clicks on links in your ad that lead to a destination, such as your website, an app store, a WhatsApp chat or an Instant Experience. They exclude likes, comments, profile taps and clicks to expand the ad.Metrics
- LPVLanding page viewsLanding page views count the times someone clicked your ad's link and the destination page or Instant Experience actually loaded. They sit between link clicks and on-site actions, so they show how many clicks turned into real visits.Metrics
- LTVCustomer lifetime value (LTV)Customer lifetime value (LTV or CLV) is the total margin — or revenue — a customer brings in over their relationship with your brand, usually measured over a fixed window such as 12 months. It tells you how much you can afford to pay to acquire a customer.Metrics
- LTV:CACLTV:CAC ratioThe LTV:CAC ratio compares what a customer is worth over their lifetime (LTV) with what it cost to acquire them (CAC). A ratio of 3 means each customer brings back three times their acquisition cost. Below 1, growth loses money.Metrics
M
- MERMER (marketing efficiency ratio)MER (marketing efficiency ratio) is your total revenue divided by your total marketing spend across every channel. It gives a blended, whole-business view that doesn't rely on any ad platform's attribution.Metrics
- Meta Ad LibraryThe Meta Ad Library is Meta's free, public database of ads running across Facebook, Instagram and its other apps. Anyone can search by advertiser or keyword to see each ad's creative, copy, start date and platforms, which makes it a staple of competitor research.Creative
- Meta PixelThe Meta Pixel is JavaScript code on your website that reports visitor actions, such as viewing a product, adding to cart, starting checkout and purchasing, back to Meta. Those events power conversion reporting, optimisation and website custom audiences.Tracking & attribution
N
O
P
- Partnership adsPartnership ads are Meta ads that run with both a creator's and a brand's identity, showing the creator's handle alongside the brand. They replaced branded content ads and are the standard way to run influencer content as paid ads.Creative
- POASPOAS (profit on ad spend)POAS (profit on ad spend) is the gross profit your ads generate for every unit of ad spend. A POAS of 1.0 means the profit from ad-driven orders exactly covers the ads. Above 1.0, they pay for themselves and more.Metrics
R
- ReachReach is the number of unique people who saw your ad at least once in a given period. Unlike impressions, each person counts only once however many times they saw it, so reach shows how widely your budget is spreading.Metrics
- Reels adsReels ads are full-screen vertical ads that appear between Reels on Instagram and Facebook. They play like organic short videos, so creative that feels native, uses sound and hooks in the first seconds usually performs best.Creative
- RetargetingRetargeting shows ads to people who have already interacted with your brand, such as site visitors, cart abandoners, video viewers or social engagers, to bring them back to buy. On Meta it runs on custom audiences built from pixel, server and engagement data.Audiences
- ROASROAS (return on ad spend)ROAS (return on ad spend) is the revenue your ads bring in for every unit of currency spent on them. A ROAS of 3 means ₹3 (or $3) in attributed sales for every ₹1 (or $1) of ad spend.Metrics
- ROAS goalA ROAS goal is a Meta bid strategy for value optimisation that asks Meta to keep your average return on ad spend at or above a figure you set, while maximising purchase value. It replaced the older minimum ROAS setting.Auction & bidding
S
- Split testing (A/B testing)Split testing, which Meta calls A/B testing, compares two or more versions of a campaign, ad set or ad by dividing the audience into random, non-overlapping groups, so each version gets a fair share of similar people.Campaign setup
- Stories adsStories ads are full-screen vertical image or video ads that appear between people's Stories on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. People tap through Stories quickly, so the message has to land in the first moments.Creative
T
- ThruPlayA ThruPlay is a video play that reaches the end of a video shorter than 15 seconds, or at least 15 seconds of a longer video. It is also an optimisation goal and billing option Meta offers for video view campaigns.Metrics
- Thumbstop ratioThumbstop ratio is the share of impressions in which people watched at least the first three seconds of a video ad. It shows how well the opening stops the scroll. It is an industry metric, not a standard Ads Manager column.Metrics
U
- UGCUGC ads (user-generated content ads)UGC ads use content made by customers or creators (or made to look like it), such as selfie-style reviews, unboxings and demos. They trade studio polish for authenticity, and you need permission before using anyone's content in paid ads.Creative
- UTMUTM parametersUTM parameters are tags added to the end of an ad's link, such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, that tell Google Analytics, Shopify and other tools where a visit came from. On Meta, dynamic URL parameters fill them in automatically.Tracking & attribution
V
- Value-based lookalike audienceA value-based lookalike is a Meta lookalike audience built from a source that includes how much each customer spent, so Meta looks for people similar to your most valuable customers rather than all customers equally.Audiences
- View-through conversionA view-through conversion is a purchase or other conversion by someone who saw your ad but didn't click or engage with it, within a set window, usually 1 day. Meta includes 1-day view in its default attribution setting.Tracking & attribution
