Detailed targeting

Detailed targeting is Meta's option to reach people by interests, demographics and behaviours, such as an interest in yoga or being a frequent traveller. Interest exclusions were removed in 2024 and 2025, and in Advantage+ audience interests are suggestions only.

Also called: interest targeting, Facebook interests, demographic targeting, behaviour targeting, Advantage detailed targeting

Detailed targeting is the set of interests, demographics and behaviours you can use to describe who should see your ads. It is what most people mean by interest targeting. Meta infers these categories from what people do on its apps, such as the Pages they like and the ads they engage with.

The three groups

Group Examples
Demographics Education, job titles, life events, relationship status, parents
Interests Hobbies, activities, topics, brands and product categories
Behaviours Purchase behaviour, device usage, travel, digital activities

Exact options vary by country and change over time. Meta has removed many categories over the years, including, in January 2022, detailed targeting options relating to topics such as health, race or ethnicity, political beliefs, religion and sexual orientation.

What changed recently

  • Exclusions are gone. Meta began removing detailed targeting exclusions in mid-2024 and stopped them in existing campaigns from early 2025. You can no longer exclude people by interest or behaviour. You can still exclude custom audiences.
  • Interests are suggestions in Advantage+ audience. If you use Advantage+ audience, any interests you add guide Meta but don't restrict it.
  • Automatic expansion. With original audiences, Meta may reach people beyond your detailed targeting when it expects better results, and for some objectives this is on by default. Ads Manager calls it Advantage detailed targeting.

How detailed targeting combines

Within one box, options use OR logic: people interested in yoga OR pilates. Using narrow further adds an AND: people interested in yoga AND who are parents. Every AND makes the audience smaller.

When detailed targeting still helps

  • New pixels with little data. Interests give Meta a starting point before it has buyers to learn from.
  • Niche products where the buyer group is genuinely small and identifiable, such as a specialist hobby.
  • Testing a new market or angle, where you want to see if a particular group responds.

For many established e-commerce accounts, broad targeting or Advantage+ audience performs as well as or better than interests, because Meta's conversion signals are richer than interest labels. It varies by account, so test it.

Worked example

Example: a yoga mat brand testing three ad sets with the same creative and budget.

Ad set Targeting What you learn
A Advantage+ audience, no suggestions How far Meta's own signals get you
B Interests: yoga OR pilates OR meditation Whether interest labels add anything
C 1% purchaser lookalike Whether your customer data adds more

Judge on cost per purchase over at least a week. If A matches B, interests aren't helping. Our guide to broad vs interest vs lookalike targeting has the full method.

Common mistakes

  • Stacking many narrow layers until the audience is too small to learn.
  • Choosing interests that describe fans of a topic rather than buyers of your product.
  • Following old guides that rely on exclusions Meta no longer allows.

Frequently asked questions

What is detailed targeting on Facebook ads?

Detailed targeting lets you reach people by interests, demographics and behaviours, such as an interest in running, being a new parent or being a frequent traveller. Meta infers these from activity on its apps.

Can I still exclude interests on Meta ads?

No. Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions, starting in mid-2024, with existing campaigns losing them from early 2025. You can still exclude custom audiences, such as customer lists and website visitors.

Is interest targeting still worth using?

Sometimes. It helps new accounts with little conversion data, niche products and tests of a specific group. Many established e-commerce accounts find broad or Advantage+ audience targeting performs as well or better, so test both with the same budget and creative.

What is Advantage detailed targeting?

It is Meta's option to show your ads to people beyond the interests you selected when it expects better results. For some objectives it is on by default with original audiences. With Advantage+ audience, interests are already treated as suggestions.
