Exclusion audiences

Exclusion audiences are custom audiences you tell Meta not to show an ad to, such as recent purchasers or existing customers. They keep prospecting spend on new people and stop retargeting ads reaching people who already bought.

Also called: excluded audiences, audience exclusions, custom audience exclusions, exclude purchasers, suppression audience

An exclusion audience is a group of people you remove from an ad set's delivery. On Meta today, that means custom audiences: customer lists, website visitors, people who engaged with your Instagram or Facebook, video viewers and so on. Interest and behaviour exclusions are no longer available, so custom audiences are the tool for keeping ads away from the wrong people.

Why exclusions matter

  • Protecting new customer spend. Without exclusions, prospecting campaigns often spend on existing customers, who are cheap to convert and make ROAS look good while growth stalls. NC-ROAS shows when this is happening.
  • Stopping wasted retargeting. Showing a "complete your order" ad to someone who already completed it wastes money and annoys them.
  • Separating funnel stages. Excluding recent visitors from prospecting keeps cold and warm campaigns from competing for the same people.

Common exclusion setups

Campaign Exclude Why
Prospecting Purchasers in the last 180 days, customer list Find new buyers
Prospecting Website visitors in the last 30 days (optional) Leave them to retargeting
Cart retargeting Purchasers in the last 7 to 14 days Don't chase people who bought
Upsell to customers None, or people who bought the upsell item Reach existing customers on purpose

Adjust windows to your buying cycle. A daily-use consumable may need shorter purchaser exclusions than furniture.

How exclusions work with Advantage+ audiences

In Advantage+ audience, excluded custom audiences are one of the few hard controls Meta keeps, so they still apply. In Advantage+ sales campaigns, Meta has its own existing customer settings, which let you define existing customers and, depending on your account, see or limit how much budget goes to them. These options have changed several times, so check the campaign's audience section.

How to build a purchaser exclusion

  1. In Audiences, create a custom audience from your website, using the Purchase event and a window such as 180 days.
  2. Create a second custom audience from a customer list exported from your store, refreshed regularly or synced through your platform's integration.
  3. Add both as exclusions on prospecting ad sets.
  4. Check the audience size. Meta needs enough matched people for an exclusion to have an effect.

Worked example

Example: a prospecting campaign spends ₹1,00,000 in a month and Meta attributes 250 purchases. Your store shows only 140 of those buyers were new. After excluding purchasers from the last 180 days, attributed purchases fall to 190, but new customers rise to 165. Blended ROAS dips, while the cost per new customer improves. That trade is usually the point.

Common mistakes

  • Stale customer lists. A list uploaded once a year misses everyone since.
  • Excluding too much. Removing every visitor and engager from prospecting can shrink reach and raise CPMs.
  • Expecting perfect suppression. Matching isn't 100%, so some excluded people will still see ads.

For retargeting structures that use exclusions well, see Facebook retargeting ads.

Frequently asked questions

How do I exclude existing customers from Facebook ads?

Create custom audiences of purchasers from your pixel and from a customer list, then add them as exclusions on prospecting ad sets. In Advantage+ sales campaigns, use the existing customer settings Meta offers in the campaign's audience section.

Can I exclude interests or behaviours on Meta?

No. Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions in 2024 and 2025. Exclusions now work through custom audiences, such as customer lists, website visitors and engagers.

Do exclusions work with Advantage+ audience?

Yes. Excluded custom audiences are one of the hard controls Advantage+ audience keeps, alongside locations, minimum age and languages. Meta won't deliver to people it matches to your excluded audiences.

Why do excluded people still see my ads?

Customer list matching is never complete, people use different emails or devices, and pixel audiences only include people Meta could identify. Some overlap is normal. Keep lists fresh and use both pixel and customer-list exclusions.
