Advantage+ audience is the default way Meta targets ads in most new Sales, Leads and App campaigns. Instead of you defining who sees the ad, Meta's delivery system decides, using conversion data, engagement signals and what it knows about people. You can add suggestions to point it in a direction, and a small set of controls to rule people out.
Suggestions vs controls
The key idea is the difference between a suggestion and a control.
| Type | Examples | How Meta treats it |
|---|---|---|
| Audience controls | Locations, minimum age, languages, excluded custom audiences | Hard limits Meta won't go beyond |
| Audience suggestions | Age range, gender, interests, custom audiences, lookalikes | A starting point. Meta can go beyond them when it expects better results |
Meta generally prioritises your suggestions at first, then expands. There's no maximum age or gender control in Advantage+ audience at the time of writing. If you need either as a hard limit, switch to original audience options.
Advantage+ audience vs original audiences
When you turn Advantage+ audience off, you use original audience options: locations, age, gender, detailed targeting, custom audiences and lookalikes as real constraints. Even then, Meta may expand detailed targeting automatically for some objectives.
| Advantage+ audience | Original audiences | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | Mostly Meta | Mostly you |
| Reach | As wide as your controls allow | Limited by your choices |
| Best for | Brands with good conversion data | Strict legal, product or market limits |
| Risk | Spend on people outside your ideal customer | Audiences too small to learn |
When it works well
- Your Meta Pixel and Conversions API send reliable Purchase events with values.
- Your product has a broad potential market.
- Your creative says clearly who the product is for. With automated targeting, the creative does much of the targeting work. See broad targeting.
When to be careful
- Products with legal age limits or regional restrictions, where you need hard controls.
- Very niche B2B or professional products.
- Brand-new pixels with almost no conversions, where Meta has little to learn from.
How to set it up well
- Set the countries or regions you actually ship to as a location control.
- Set the minimum age if your product or market needs it.
- Exclude recent purchasers if the campaign is for new customers. See exclusion audiences.
- Add one or two suggestions if you have strong data, such as a purchaser lookalike.
- Let it run for a week before judging, and compare against an original audience setup if you want proof. Our guide to broad vs interest vs lookalike targeting shows how to test it fairly.
Frequently asked questions
What is Advantage+ audience on Facebook ads?
Advantage+ audience is Meta's automated targeting. Meta decides who sees your ads based on its own signals, while treating ages, interests and audiences you add as suggestions. Locations, minimum age, languages and excluded custom audiences remain hard controls.
Does Advantage+ audience ignore my interests?
Not entirely. Meta uses your suggestions as a starting point and generally prioritises them early, but it can show ads to people outside them when it predicts better results. If you need interests as a strict limit, use original audience options.
Can I set a maximum age in Advantage+ audience?
At the time of writing, no. Minimum age is a control, but maximum age and gender are only suggestions. Switch to original audience options if you need them as hard limits.
Is Advantage+ audience better than interest targeting?
For many e-commerce brands with good conversion data, automated targeting performs as well as or better than narrow interests, because Meta can look for buyers anywhere. It isn't guaranteed, so test it against your current setup with the same budget and creative.
