Reach

Reach is the number of unique people who saw your ad at least once in a given period. Unlike impressions, each person counts only once however many times they saw it, so reach shows how widely your budget is spreading.

Also called: unique reach, people reached, accounts reached, unique users

Formula

Reach = impressions ÷ frequency (Ads Manager reports it directly)

90,000 impressions at a frequency of 1.5 = 60,000 people reached.

Why it matters

Reach tells you how many different people your budget is touching. For growth, that matters: new customers come from people who haven't seen you yet. If reach stalls while spend holds steady, you're buying more impressions on the same people, frequency rises and results often soften — see ad fatigue.

Reach vs impressions

Impressions count every time an ad appears on screen. Reach counts the people behind those impressions, once each. Someone who sees your ad on Monday morning, Monday night and Thursday adds three impressions but only one to reach. Impressions divided by reach is frequency.

Meta describes reach as the number of Accounts Center accounts that saw your ads, and labels it an estimate — so treat small differences as noise.

Why you can't add reach up

Reach is de-duplicated, so it doesn't sum:

  • Seven daily reach figures added together overstate weekly reach, because the same people appear on several days.
  • Reach for two ad sets added together overstates total reach whenever their audiences overlap.

Always pull reach for the full date range and the full set of ads you're asking about.

Worked example

Example: a ₹30,000 prospecting campaign over 14 days.

  • Impressions: 1,80,000 (a CPM of about ₹167)
  • Reach: 72,000
  • Frequency: 2.5

Cost per 1,000 people reached = ₹30,000 ÷ 72 ≈ ₹417. That's the real price of meeting new people — here 2.5 times the CPM, because each person saw the ad 2.5 times on average.

What's a good reach?

It depends on your budget and your market. The useful check is how reach responds to spend. If reach grows roughly in line with budget, there's headroom. If more budget mostly lifts frequency, you've hit the edge of the people Meta wants to show that ad to.

How to improve it

  • Loosen targeting — broad targeting gives the system more people to find buyers among.
  • Add fresh creatives with different angles, which can open up new pockets of the audience.
  • Allow more placements, so ads can appear wherever your audience spends time.
  • If reach itself is the goal, run an Awareness campaign optimised for reach rather than a sales campaign.

Common mistakes

  • Adding up reach across days, ad sets or campaigns.
  • Treating reach as attention. It counts people the ad was shown to, not people who noticed it.
  • Expecting reach to scale in step with budget in a small market or a narrow audience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach is the number of unique people who saw your ad at least once. Impressions count every time the ad was shown, including repeat views by the same person. Divide impressions by reach and you get frequency.

Can I add up reach across ad sets or days?

No. Reach is de-duplicated, so adding figures together counts anyone who appears in both twice. Pull reach in Ads Manager for the full date range and all the ads you care about to get an accurate number.

Why isn't my reach growing when I increase the budget?

If extra budget mostly raises frequency, Meta is struggling to find new people it wants to show your ad to. That usually means the audience is too narrow, the creative isn't getting a strong response, or you've saturated the market for that message. Broaden targeting and add fresh creatives with new angles.
