Dynamic creative

Dynamic creative is a Meta ad set setting that mixes images, videos, headlines and text you upload into combinations and shows the ones it predicts each person will respond to. For Sales campaigns it has largely been replaced by flexible ad format.

Also called: dynamic creative optimisation, DCO, Meta dynamic creative, Facebook dynamic creative

Dynamic creative is an ad set setting in Meta Ads Manager. You switch it on, upload several images or videos and several versions of primary text, headline and description, and Meta builds combinations, showing each person the mix it predicts will work best. It was one of Meta's first creative automation tools, and it is now partly legacy.

Is dynamic creative still available?

At the time of writing, Meta has moved most of this job to newer tools, and what you see depends on the objective:

  • Sales and App promotion campaigns: flexible ad format, chosen at the ad level, has replaced dynamic creative in most accounts.
  • Other objectives: the dynamic creative toggle on the ad set is still offered in many accounts.
  • Automatic enhancements such as text variations, music and image adjustments have moved into Advantage+ creative.

Meta rolls these changes out unevenly. If your Ads Manager shows something different, go by what you see.

How dynamic creative works

  • It is switched on at the ad set level, and the ad set then holds a single dynamic ad.
  • You can upload up to 10 images or videos, plus up to 5 options each for primary text, headline and description.
  • Meta combines them and shifts delivery toward the combinations it predicts each person and placement will respond to.

It is an optimisation tool, not a testing tool. Meta isn't trying to find out which headline is best for everyone. It's trying to show each person the version they're most likely to act on.

Dynamic creative vs testing

Dynamic creative Structured creative testing
Goal Best results from a set of assets Learn which idea or asset wins
Spend split Uneven, Meta decides Controlled, by you
Readout Limited breakdowns by asset Clear per-ad results
Best use Scaling proven assets Finding new winners

If you want to know whether a new hook beats your old one, run them as separate ads or as an A/B test. Our creative testing framework covers the method.

When dynamic creative still helps

  • You run an objective where it is still offered and want Meta to match copy and images to people.
  • You have a handful of proven assets and want an easy way to combine them.
  • You don't have time to build every combination by hand.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing very different products in one dynamic ad. Combinations can produce a headline about one product on an image of another.
  • Treating breakdowns as test results. Meta gives more delivery to some assets early, so their numbers aren't a fair comparison.
  • Uploading near-duplicates. Five headlines that say the same thing in slightly different words give Meta nothing to choose between.
  • Following old tutorials. Guides written before 2024 describe options that may have moved to flexible ad format or Advantage+ creative.

Frequently asked questions

Is Facebook dynamic creative being phased out?

For Sales and App promotion campaigns, flexible ad format has largely replaced it in most accounts, and creative enhancements have moved into Advantage+ creative. The dynamic creative toggle is still offered for some other objectives at the time of writing.

What is the difference between dynamic creative and flexible ad format?

Dynamic creative is switched on at the ad set level and the ad set holds one dynamic ad. Flexible ad format is chosen at the ad level, so one ad set can contain several flexible ads alongside normal ones. Both let Meta combine your assets for each person.

How many assets can I add to dynamic creative?

Up to 10 images or videos, and up to 5 options each for primary text, headline and description. Meta builds combinations from them and shows each person the mix it predicts will work best.

Can I use dynamic creative for A/B testing?

It isn't designed for it. Meta shifts spend toward the combinations it expects to perform, so asset breakdowns aren't a fair comparison. Use separate ads or Meta's A/B test feature when you need to know which idea wins.
