Why it matters
Ads bring people to the door. The page has to sell. Because ROAS = CTR × conversion rate × order value × 1,000 ÷ CPM, lifting conversion rate from 1.5% to 2% raises ROAS by a third at the same CPM and CTR. Media buyers can spend weeks tuning audiences for small gains while the product page quietly loses most of its visitors.
How to calculate it
Pick one denominator and stick to it:
- Per link click: purchases ÷ link clicks. This includes people who tapped but never saw the page load.
- Per landing page view: purchases ÷ landing page views. Cleaner, because it only counts visits where your page loaded and the pixel fired.
A large gap between link clicks and landing page views points to slow pages or accidental taps — worth fixing before anything else. Build either version as a custom metric in Ads Manager, or work it out in a spreadsheet.
Worked example
Example: last month's funnel for a ₹1,299 product.
| Step | Count | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Link clicks | 4,000 | — |
| Landing page views | 3,000 | 75% of clicks |
| Adds to cart | 240 | 8% of views |
| Purchases | 60 | 2.0% of views |
A quarter of clicks never load the page, and three in four carts are abandoned. Those two leaks are likely costing more sales than any audience tweak would win back. Fly ROAS's purchase-funnel leak detection flags drop-offs like these, so you know which step to fix first.
What's a good conversion rate?
It varies with price, category, traffic source and how warm the audience is — people retargeted after a visit behave very differently from cold prospects. Compare against your own history and across your ad sets rather than a borrowed figure. Then plug your real rate into the Meta ads budget calculator to see what it means for budget, CPA and ROAS.
How to improve it
- Match the page to the ad: same product, price, offer and visual.
- Speed up mobile pages — most Meta traffic arrives on a phone.
- Show price, delivery time, returns and payment options (including cash on delivery, if you offer it) near the top of the page.
- Add genuine proof: real reviews, ingredient or material details, clear photos.
- Cut checkout steps and surprise costs such as late shipping charges.
Common mistakes
- Blaming the page when tracking is broken. If your Meta Pixel or Conversions API misses purchases, conversion rate looks worse than it is — run through this Shopify pixel and Conversions API checklist.
- Mixing denominators between reports.
- Trusting tiny samples: 3 sales from 100 clicks is not a 3% conversion rate you can bank on.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good conversion rate for Facebook ads?
It varies widely with price, category and how warm the audience is, so there's no reliable universal figure. Compare your rate across ad sets and against your own history instead. Judge retargeting and cold prospecting audiences separately, because they behave very differently.
How do you calculate conversion rate from Meta ads?
Divide purchases by landing page views (or by link clicks) for the same period and multiply by 100. For example, 30 purchases from 1,500 landing page views is a 2% conversion rate. Use the same denominator every time so your reports stay comparable.
Why don't my link clicks and landing page views match?
Link clicks count taps on the ad, while landing page views only count visits where your page actually loaded and your pixel fired. Slow pages, accidental taps and people leaving before the page loads all widen the gap. A large gap is a sign to speed up the page or check your pixel setup.
