Advantage+ catalog ads turn your product catalogue into ads automatically. Instead of designing an ad for each product, you build one template, and Meta fills it with the products each person is most likely to buy, using your catalogue and the events your pixel and server send.
How they work
Three pieces have to line up:
- A product catalogue in Meta's Commerce Manager, with an ID, title, image, price, link and availability for every product. Shopify and other platforms can sync this automatically.
- Events with matching IDs. Your Meta Pixel and Conversions API send ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase with content_ids that exactly match the catalogue IDs.
- A template: a single image, carousel or collection format that pulls in product images, names and prices.
If the IDs don't match (for example, the pixel sends variant IDs while the catalogue uses product IDs), Meta can't connect behaviour to products, and delivery suffers.
Two ways to use them
Retargeting. Show people the exact products they viewed or added to their cart, plus related items. It's retargeting that builds itself, and for stores with large catalogues it's usually the easiest place to start.
Broad audiences. Show products to people who haven't visited your site but are likely to be interested, based on their activity on and off Meta's apps. This suits stores with many products, where no single hero product carries the account.
How to set them up
- Connect or upload your catalogue and clear feed errors in Commerce Manager.
- In Events Manager, confirm product events carry content IDs that match the catalogue.
- Create product sets if you want to advertise a slice of the range, such as bestsellers or a new collection.
- In a Sales campaign, switch on the catalogue option and choose whether to retarget past visitors or find new people (check Ads Manager for the current wording).
- Design the template: consider frames and price overlays, and keep product images clean and consistent.
Common mistakes
- Stale prices or stock. Advertising an old price or a sold-out product wastes money and annoys shoppers.
- Weak product images. Low-resolution or inconsistent photos drag down the whole template.
- Not excluding recent purchasers from retargeting, so buyers keep seeing what they've just bought.
- Judging on ROAS alone. Catalogue retargeting often shows high ROAS because many viewers would have bought anyway. Check incrementality before moving big budgets.
If you're on Shopify, the Meta Pixel and Conversions API checklist covers the event setup these ads depend on.
Frequently asked questions
Are dynamic product ads the same as Advantage+ catalog ads?
Yes. Meta renamed dynamic ads, often called DPA or dynamic product ads, to Advantage+ catalog ads. The mechanics are the same: a product catalogue plus pixel or app events, with templates that fill in products automatically.
Why are my catalog ads not showing the right products?
Usually because the content IDs sent by your pixel or Conversions API don't match the IDs in your catalogue, or because events are missing product data. Compare a few events in Events Manager with catalogue items. Feed errors, out-of-stock items and rejected images also limit what Meta can show.
Can I use Advantage+ catalog ads for prospecting?
Yes. Besides retargeting, you can deliver catalogue ads to broad audiences who haven't visited your site, and Meta picks products they're likely to be interested in. It suits stores with many products where no single hero product carries the account.
