An account spending limit is an overall cap on how much your ad account can spend across all campaigns. You set it in the billing or payment settings for the ad account. When total spend since the limit was set or last reset reaches the cap, Meta stops delivering every ad in the account. It is a safety net, separate from campaign and ad set budgets.
How it works
- It covers the whole account, not a single campaign.
- It is cumulative. It counts spend since you set it or last reset it, and doesn't restart automatically every month.
- When you hit it, everything stops. Campaigns may still look active in Ads Manager while not delivering, which is a common source of confusion.
- You can change it at any time: raise it, reset the amount spent to zero, or remove it.
Account spending limit vs budgets
| Control | Level | Resets? | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account spending limit | Whole ad account | Only when you reset it | Hard ceiling and safety net |
| Lifetime budget | Campaign or ad set | No, fixed total | Total for a set period |
| Daily budget (ad set or campaign) | Campaign or ad set | Rolling daily average | Ongoing pacing |
| Campaign spending limit | Single campaign | No | Cap on one campaign's total |
Budgets tell Meta how to pace spend. The account spending limit stops spend entirely when reached.
When to use one
- Agencies and freelancers who want a hard stop matching the client's approved spend.
- Teams with several people building campaigns, where a mistyped budget could overspend.
- New advertisers who want certainty that spend can't exceed a fixed amount while they learn.
How to set it
- Open Billing and payments for the ad account (often under Payment settings).
- Find Account spending limit and choose to set a limit.
- Enter the amount, in the ad account's currency.
- Note the date. If you want a monthly limit, set a reminder to reset it each month.
Worked example
Example: you plan to spend ₹1,50,000 a month and set an account spending limit of ₹1,60,000 on the 1st, leaving a small buffer.
- By the 28th you have spent ₹1,60,000 because a festive campaign spent faster than planned.
- All ads stop on the 28th.
- On the 1st of the next month, nothing restarts automatically. You must reset the amount spent or raise the limit.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting it exists. If every campaign stops delivering at once, check the spending limit before anything else. Our guide to Facebook ads not spending has the full checklist.
- Assuming it resets monthly. It doesn't, unless you reset it.
- Using it instead of budgets. It stops everything at once, which can cut off winning campaigns. Use budgets for pacing and the limit as a backstop.
Fly ROAS Autopilot also works inside a monthly cap and a daily limit that you set and only you can raise, which sits on top of Meta's own limits. Plan the total with the Meta ads budget calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is an account spending limit on Meta ads?
It is a cap on the total amount your ad account can spend across all campaigns. When spend reaches it, every ad stops until you raise, reset or remove the limit. You set it in the ad account's billing and payment settings.
Does the Facebook account spending limit reset every month?
No. It is cumulative from when you set it or last reset it. If you want a monthly limit, reset the amount spent at the start of each month.
Why are all my Facebook ads suddenly not delivering?
A common cause is reaching the account spending limit, which stops every ad while campaigns can still appear active. Check billing and payment settings, then payment method issues, then ad rejections.
What is the difference between an account spending limit and a budget?
A budget tells Meta how much to spend on a campaign or ad set, daily or over its lifetime. The account spending limit is a hard ceiling on the whole account that stops everything when reached.
